As the Air Penny 2 celebrates its 27th birthday, Nike gives on of the OG colours worn on-court by Penny Hardaway in 1996. Dressed in the signature white/blue of Penny's Orlando Magic uniform, the follow-up to his first model improved on some of the design ideas first introduced in 1995.
Amongst the innovations of the Air Penny 2 was the Phylon midsole with lateral support wing, which runs up the shoe's quarter. Buried within the midsole is a combination of Zoom Air in the forefoot and visible Air Max bubble at the heel—the first time Nike combined the two technologies. Torsional rigidity was improved with a carbon fibre shank, peeking out of the midsole like a Formula 1 car's wing.
The distrinctive flowing lines of the upper are constructed with full grain leather and Nike's famed Durabuck textiles, accented with hits of reflective material for added flash on and off the court.
